The Sofitel is positioned between the Medina and the Hivernage district — giving access to both the historic core and the newer city. The Koutoubia Mosque and the entrance to the Medina are within walking distance. Jardin Majorelle (Yves Saint Laurent’s famous garden), the Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs are all within taxi or short ride distance.

Food and things to do nearby

Moroccan food — tagine (slow-cooked meat with vegetables and preserved lemon), couscous, bastilla (pigeon or chicken pie with almonds), briouat (fried pastry parcels) and the city’s extraordinary bread culture — is one of the great reasons to visit. The hotel’s restaurants are reliable; the Medina’s food stalls on Jemaa el-Fnaa and the surrounding streets are more authentic.

March–May and September–November offer the most pleasant conditions. Book well ahead for the high-season spring and autumn windows.

Watch out for

The Sofitel is positioned outside the Medina, which means it offers a different experience from staying in a traditional riad inside the old city. Both approaches to Marrakech are valid, but they are distinct. Travellers who specifically want to be inside the Medina at night should consider a riad as an alternative or supplement.
